A personal message from the Interim CEO, Avi Lewinson
Judaism is a religion that places community above the individual. As
a longtime leader of JCC’s, I like to say, Community is our middle
name, and the Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center is no exception.
It is important to remember, that together we can achieve what the
individual alone cannot. It is you, this community that has been
coming to the SYJCC, sharing your families and your lives, that
serves as a motivating core value for our staff and volunteers and for
this we are deeply and truly grateful. The sustaining value of our community is Chesed - kindness or
righteousness. Honoring our parents, respecting the elderly, visiting
the sick, compassion for animals, giving charity, helping those in
need, welcoming the stranger and fighting for truth and justice.
Chesed is the guiding principle for leading a Jewish life.Community is strength. When we come together as a community our
prayers are more powerful and words have higher meaning. When
we come together in acts of chesed our deeds have the potential to
transform the world. And here is where hope flourishes - we needn’t
be passive observers in this world; as Jews we can join together to
actively create a world that is better and kinder. We are happy to bring you this program guide, which is filled with
a wide range of programs and services to meet your diverse and
varied interests. As always, we look forward to your feedback and
suggestions, as our goal is to provide exceptional customer service
and outstanding social, recreational and educational programs that
are fun and intellectually exciting. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t also acknowledge with heartfelt
appreciation and thank UJA Federation of New York, United Way of
Long Island, New York State Office for the Aging, Suffolk County and
other public and private organizations for their longtime support and
commitment to our JCC.Best wishes, Avi

“Fauda” (Arabic for ‘Chaos’)
depicts the two-sided story of
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Doron, a commander of undercover
Israeli unit, the Israeli Special
Forces, operating inside Palestinian
territories, and his team, are hunting
down Hamas terrorist Abu-Ahmed.
On the other side of the fence, the
life of Abu-Ahmed and his family,
who has thus far murdered 143
Israelis, will never accept the State
of Israel, and will continue Jihad for as long as it takes. Open to the Community
